Objective: To provide 24/7 food grains to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Key Features of Annapurti
- Design and Development: Annapurti is a Made-in-India product, designed and developed by World Food Programme (WFP) India.
- Functionality: It delivers grain (wheat, rice, or millet) in selected types and quantities based on biometric authentication.
Benefits:
Universal Access: Provides continuous access to food grains, reducing waiting time by 70%.
Energy Efficiency: Capable of connecting to solar panels for automatic refilling.
Recognition: Honored as one of the top 5 innovative solutions to eliminate hunger at the 2022 WFP Innovation Awards.
National Food Security Act (NFSA)
- NFSA was enacted in 2013.
- Objective: To ensure food security and provide subsidized food grains to the poor.
Key Provisions
Coverage: Entitles 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population to receive subsidized food grains.
Food grain supply: Ensures food security through subsidized cereals like wheat, rice, and millet distribution.
Ration shops: Beneficiaries get subsidized food grains (wheat, rice, and millet).
Per capita entitlement: Rice – 3 kg, wheat – 2 kg, and millets – 1 kg monthly.
Special provisions:
- Special assistance to mothers and children for nutritional support.
- To ensure the availability of food grains to priority households.
- Food Security Commission is responsible for its monitoring and inspection.
- Mechanisms to tackle corruption and mismanagement.
