24/7 grain ATM launched in Odisha

Introduction

Launch Date: August 10, 2024

Location: Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Objective: To provide 24/7 food grains to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

Key Features of Annapurti

  • Design and Development: Annapurti is a Made-in-India product, designed and developed by World Food Programme (WFP) India.
  • Functionality: It delivers grain (wheat, rice, or millet) in selected types and quantities based on biometric authentication.

Benefits:

Universal Access: Provides continuous access to food grains, reducing waiting time by 70%.

Energy Efficiency: Capable of connecting to solar panels for automatic refilling.

Recognition: Honored as one of the top 5 innovative solutions to eliminate hunger at the 2022 WFP Innovation Awards.

National Food Security Act (NFSA)

  • NFSA was enacted in 2013.
  •  Objective: To ensure food security and provide subsidized food grains to the poor.

Key Provisions

Coverage: Entitles 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population to receive subsidized food grains.

Food grain supply:  Ensures food security through subsidized cereals like wheat, rice, and millet distribution.

Ration shops: Beneficiaries get subsidized food grains (wheat, rice, and millet).

Per capita entitlement: Rice – 3 kg, wheat – 2 kg, and millets – 1 kg monthly.

Special provisions:

  • Special assistance to mothers and children for nutritional support.
  • To ensure the availability of food grains to priority households.
  • Food Security Commission is responsible for its monitoring and inspection.
  •  Mechanisms to tackle corruption and mismanagement.
  • Beneficiaries have a legal right to food, allowing them to raise concerns about quality and availability.

World Food Programme (WFP)

Foundation: Established by the United Nations in 1961.

Role: The world’s largest humanitarian organization focused on reducing global hunger and providing emergency food aid.

Recognition: Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to fight hunger and contribute to peace.

Annapurni Initiative

Launch: 2021

Objective: To improve access to nutritious food for people in need and increase food distribution efficiency using technology.

Key Features:

  • Uses technology to streamline food distribution processes.
  • Focuses on reducing dependency on external sources by promoting local food production.
  • Helps farmers grow more crops by providing necessary support and resources.
  • Includes education on good nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Promotes environmentally friendly agricultural methods.
  • Addresses issues of hunger and malnutrition through improved agricultural practices and education.

Goals:

  • Aims to provide healthy, balanced diets to the underprivileged.
  • Strengthens local food systems and supports rural economies.

Impact:

  • Improves access to and availability of nutritious food for people in need.
  • Encourages practices that are both environmentally beneficial and economically viable.
